These mostly grey cockatoos are fond of the cooler and wetter forests and woodlands of Australia. The male of this species has a red head and crest whilst the female possesses a small grey fluffy crest. They have a distinctive call described as resembling a creaky gate.  These birds nest in young solid trees, with the females using their beaks to hollow out nesting cavities. Land clearing has caused a significant reduction to the numbers of these birds in recent years.
