Common Brushtail Possums are the most successful possum group due to the ability to cohabitate with humans in urban areas, having lived in Australia for millions of years. They are not particular about their choice of food, being opportunistic omnivores that consume insects, flowers, fruit, and leaves. They have also been known to scavenge through household garbage. They are not very social animals and only come together to breed. The gestation period for a Brushtail possum is 16 to 18 days with usually only one born weighing a measly 0.2 grams at birth where it climbs into its mother's pouch to grow. The greatest threats to brushtail possums are the loss of habitat due to human intervention, predation by, foxes, cats and dogs, and competition for food sources. Brushtails are very smart and contrary to the urban myth that calls them 'vicious' can become quite tame and friendly.
